How to Read the Bible, by Joe Pelayo

I read the Bible as was taught to me by Zig Ziglar. First, I read the book of Genesis, so that I could understand the beginning of the world. Then I started at Matthew and read to the end, (The New Testament), so I could know Jesus. Then I read the Old Testament to the end, skimming Genesis again and then, starting with Exodus where I had left off, I read to the end of the Old Testament. I scanned Palms and Proverbs but, saving them for the last, I got much more wisdom and knowledge and meaning from them after I had read the story of the Bible. The Bible is in two parts; the Old Testament, the history of the world, and the New Testament, the history of Jesus Christ’s life on earth.

In the version I read, the introduction to the Bible was super helpful. However, they put it at the end! I don’t know why. Well, fortunately, I found the introduction before I got too far. It gave a synopsis and a wonderful brief history of every chapter which I very much enjoyed reading as a preview before I started each new chapter. I also took great satisfaction in checking off the chapters as I read them. I think it's okay to write in your Bible. In fact, I think He likes it when we underline and circle what impacts us and when we make notes in our Bible – as we study His Word.

Observe the string of knowledge rather than trying to understand each piece. God will often repeat the same message in different ways. He knows we all learn differently.

For me, when it came to strings of names I figured I wouldn’t remember them anyway, so I skipped them. I also ignored the hints at the bottom on each page, my first pass through.

Pray before each reading session, for God to grant you, “the wisdom to understand what I am about to read/receive.” Always end your prayers “In Jesus' name we/I pray.”

God Bless You!
